Turing Test
A classic test proposed by computer pioneer Alan Turing in 1950. His test, intended to determine whether machines can "think", involved a human subject, who was allowed to ask any question (via teletype) between two otherwise anonymous sources. One source was a human, the other a machine. If the human subject was unable to determine which of the two sources was the machine, then the machine would be said to have passed the turing test.

A proposed variant for virtual orchestra posits the same human subject, now listening to two sources, one a traditional orchestra, the other a machine. If the human is unable to determine the difference between them, then the virtual orchestra would be said to pass the turing test for music.
